Undergraduate Degree Concentration

The Global and National Security (GNS) concentration is designed for students who wish to focus on major global, national and human security issues, ranging from intelligence gathering and cyberspace, to environmental sustainability, and conflict resolution.  The emphasis is on acquiring skills in problem solving, research and analysis, technical subjects, policy-making and management, drawing from a wide variety of academic disciplines.

Careers you can pursue with this degree include:

military officer, intelligence analyst, law enforcement, homeland security official, cyber and human security, international business or law, intercultural communication, diplomacy, conflict resolution, international public health, geography, political science, environmental studies, economics, and teaching.

 

Graduation Requirements
Students must receive a grade of “C” or higher in all the following requirements:

 

 

Credit Hours

1.

PHIL 1120 – Logic, Reasoning, and Critical Thinking

3 hours

2.

MATH 1350 or any Calculus-level MATH course

3 hours

3.

Any Computer Science (CS) course

3 hours

4.

GLNS 340 – Elements of Global & National Security

3 hours

5.

9 Credit hours chosen from 3 of the following groups:

  • AMST 1140, PH 102, or SOCI 2340
  • ANTH 1140, ANTH 1155, LING 2110, or MLNG 1110
  • ENG 200, GEOG 217, or ME 217
  • GEOG 1150, GEOG 1165, GEOG 1175, or GEOG 181
  • PHIL 1115, RELG 1110, RELG 2110, or RELG 2120
  • POLS 2110 or POLS 2120

9 hours

6.

Completion or testing equivalent of second-semester intermediate

non-English language courses (i.e. 4th course in the sequence).

3-12 hours

7.

21 hours of approved Global and National Security Electives with no more than 9 credit hours from any one area.

Note, to satisfy the full degree requirements, in collaboration or addition to the courses above, a minimum of 45 hours of upper division credit must be earned. Pre-Requisites must be fulfilled when necessary (please refer to the course catalog for details)
