BA in Liberal Arts Graduation Requirements

Graduation is not automatic! A hold will be put on your account once you've earned 100 hours and every semester thereafter until you Apply to Graduate. The following steps need to be taken in order for you to apply and graduate:

BA in Liberal Arts Graduation Requirements

  • Establish your intended graduation date: First, you must meet with your advisor and discuss your intended graduation date and come up with a plan of action to in order to fulfill the requirements towards your graduation.
  • Check your LoboTrax Degree Audit with your advisor: At least one semester prior to the semester in which you plan to graduate, you will need to check your LoboTrax audit with your advisor to again make sure that you are working to satisfy all graduation requirements for a BA in Liberal Arts.
    • English 1120
    • 120 earned hours
    • 51 earned hours of upper-division coursework (level 300-499)
    • 15 earned hours of Liberal Arts residency
    • General Education complete
    • 2.0 (or higher) cumulative GPA
  • Submit your Graduation Essay, to your advisor, via email: Your graduation essay must be no less than 500 words. This essay should describe how you organized your Plan of Study, as well as what you learned and accomplished by designing your own degree. It should also discuss your plans for using your degree in the future. Essay deadlines are as follows:
    • April 1st (Spring graduation)
    • July 1st (Summer graduation)
    • November 1st (Fall graduation)
  • Diplomas: You will not receive your official diploma at the graduation ceremonies, and are not required to sign up for a ceremony to receive an official diploma.  Your official diploma will be mailed to the address on file for you with the Registrar, 6-8 weeks after the end of the semester your degree is officially certified. Contact your advisor if you have any questions about your official graduation status. If you'd like to change or verify your name or delivery address for your diploma, you can do so with the Office of the Registrar.
  • Sign up for a Commencement Ceremony: During the semester you plan to graduate, you must R.S.V.P. with the Liberal Arts Graduation Coordinator and the Office of the University Secretary in order to be listed in the official Graduation program(s)*, and participate in University-wide commencement ceremonies. University College conducts a department convocation for Liberal Arts. in May for all Fall, Spring and Summer graduates. Please contact your advisor for questions about the department convocation. Caps and gowns may be purchased at the UNM bookstore.  *If you have a Privacy Flag on your account, you must remove this at least two weeks prior to the ceremony in order for your name to be listed in the official Graduation programs.
